Panel 2 / 29-01-2010

European cultural space and identity

Each panel will host participants, representing think-tanks, grass-root CSOs, the academia and MEPs and will be moderated by independent facilitators.

Panel 2 will be moderated by Assoc. Prof. Ingrid Shikova - Head of Department of European Studies, Sofia University 'St Kliment Ohridski'.

The panel work will start with the presentations and continue with discussion and brainstorming. Each panel will result in a draft common concept on what Europe should look like in 2020 in the domains, related to the panel topic, including ideas about the ways and activities, through which the proposed goals could be achieved.

Those three concepts will be presented at the conference’s closing plenary session and, taking them together, we will try to summarize the civic viewpoints about the key development drivers of EU 2020.

Are these NGOs able to survive without EU funding? If no, close them down! EU 2020 - EU without NGOs. What do you think?

European cultural space means diversity and we have to sustain it, but on what price? How to make it without EU government interventions and unnecessary funding of inefficient programs?
Cultural identity is also related to bio-regional specifics-customs, crafts. To maintain it a significant level of independence and self-governance should be promoted and fostered, supporting the growth of strong autonomous regions and communities.

youth issues and sustainable development are closely related! Giving open choices to the youth for a radical shift towards relocation and starting sustainable agricultural practices. Ruralization should be prometed and necessary funding for creation of self sufficient communities is necessary in order to re-create healthy social tissue. For these communities to survive and prosper, they need support for educational facilities , home-schooling.
Lets think about immigration, trigered by environmental disasters and social disruptions throughout EU and abroad!

How to measure the effect of the measures taken by the national and European institutions aimed to build common European identity? Do polls and Eurobarometer data give enough proof of their effectivity?

There are some extreme opinions that the Bulgarian is “not a European” or feels “inferior in quite a Balkan way, in our own way.” On the other hand there is an idealized image of Europeans, who work with more discipline, rules and regulations, which make them seem different. Where is the truth about European identity of the Bulgarians?

How Turkey will influence European identity? Why and in which aspects we can say that Turkish people are Europeans? Why there is not a common view about it?

No reason to wait for the market to shape your educational policies! this is WRONG !!! EU and member states should provide opportunities for the younger generation to prepare them self for the future. We could live safer and healthier without sacrificing quality of life. Such techniques and crafts as Natural unafired brick laying and horse carriages are a pillow for the energy descent and necessary tools of survival.

How European educational policies should adapt to the new media environment of young generation - blogs, social network? Are they new base for European civic education?
